Answers to Correspondents: From Things New and Old 1858-1863, 53. Watchman, What of the Night? (21:11-12)

A very dear friend, who requests that even his initials may be withheld, desires some light on Isaiah 21:11-12. We cannot do better than quote for him Lowth’s beautiful translation of the passage.

“THE ORACLE CONCERNING DUMAH.”

11 “A voice crieth unto me from Seir:

Watchman, what from the night?

Watchman, what from the night?”

l2 “The watchman replieth:

The morning cometh, and also the night:

If ye will inquire, inquire ye: come again.”1
